If you’ve ever considered the costs and benefits of a metal building, you’ll know that a prefabricated metal structure outshines all other building designs. Many US companies supply metal structures, but Rex Metal Buildings are one of the country’s leading manufacturers and suppliers. Our design team supplies many standard-sized buildings. Or, if you prefer, design one to your specifications.
We provide many different-sized structures, but our 80×120, or 9,600sq.ft., is very popular.
At the time of writing (December 2022), building a metal prefab structure costs $12-$14/sq.ft. Therefore an 80×120 enclosure costs around $115,000-$134,500. We may not have the lowest prices around. But, our prefabricated kits are good quality, last many years, and can be customized specifically for your purpose. Don’t you think that’s a great investment?

Pricing Factors
Several factors affect the price of a Rex Metal Building:
Size
As you’d expect, your prefabricated building’s size determines its price. But, you can calculate a ballpark figure using the unit price we mentioned earlier. Typically, a standard metal building costs $12-$14/sq.ft. However, the price will increase if you want customizations or some of the many accessories available. You’ll also find that assembling and installing large buildings need heavier equipment and bigger erection crews.
You should also consider the building’s height as a factor. Generally, unless you need a specific height for an aspect of your business, for example, an indoor crane or grain excavator, most steel buildings have a roof height of about 20ft. Any higher is a waste of time and money, not only for materials cost but also because you’ll be heating the extra unused space.
Plot Size
Remember that your preferred building floor area might not always fit the plot size. So, if possible, select a metal building that suits your land’s configuration. For example, suppose your factory layout needs a footprint of 3,000sq.ft. In that case, don’t buy a 50×60 building if your plot is only 40ft wide. Instead, choose a 30×100.
Another thing to remember is that it’s cheaper to increase the length than the width because increased width requires larger roof trusses. So, you’ll save money on your investment by not increasing the roof span.
If you’re buying the building for your company, remember your employees need parking spaces, and your delivery trucks need room to turn.
Purchasing Power
When manufacturers purchase their raw materials, suppliers usually offer discounts for bulk purchases. Often, manufacturers pass on these discounts to their customers. So, ask for quotations from prominent and successful metal building suppliers like Rex.
Building Style
When buying from Rex Metal Buildings, you’ll find we have several architectural types. Typically, more complex styles cost more than simple ones.
Customization
We have ready-made designs from which we manufacture our metal buildings. However, if you require something specifically designed for your business or plot size, you must have it customized. Therefore, we draw new designs and reset our manufacturing jigs to provide something unique. As you’d expect, this will cost more. But, the added work necessary to build a Rex Metal Building to suit your circumstances is a great investment and worth every dollar. Typically, customization includes color, dimensions, insulation, specific-sized doors, windows, and internal partitioned offices.
Location
Unfortunately, it’s not only building customizations that increase the price. Where you live is also a factor that you must consider.
- Climate zone – If the region where you live suffers from bad weather, you’ll have holdups in steel erection and concrete. In turn, this will cost you more.
- Access – You might need your new metal building erected many miles from the nearest major road. If there are small and winding roads, we might need many small trucks rather than a few big ones.
- Shipping fees – Transportation costs depend on the distance between you and our supply depot.
- Contractor’s fees – Generally, steel erection contractors work inside a certain radius from their base. If you live outside their catchment area, expect a higher quotation.
Insulation
If you use the metal building for vehicle storage, you don’t always need to insulate it. However, if you have employees or store temperature-sensitive goods, you must consider one of the different insulation types we offer. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to match the R-Value of the insulation with the required value in your region. When selecting the insulating material, don’t automatically go for the cheapest product, as it’s not always the best insulator. Speak to our sales team for the best advice on what insulation to use in your situation.
Additional Factors
Other factors that affect the price include:
- Complying with local and state engineering codes.
- Extreme weather – Large snow loads and high wind speeds affect your building’s design.

13 Benefits of Metal Buildings
Typical 80×120 steel buildings have many benefits compared to wood or masonry structures. Here are just a few.
Less Maintenance
Rex Metal Buildings are proof against the usual problems that other buildings suffer from. They don’t need as much maintenance, and issues such as rot, mold, vermin, and weathering are things of the past. Furthermore, steel is more hardwearing and durable and will last many years while holding its value. And, when it does need maintenance, it’s usually minor things like surface rust or chipped paint, which you can quickly fix in-house.
Retaining Value
Commercial buildings lose some of their value year by year. Usually, this is because of the construction material. Typically, a standard commercial building loses up to 50% of its value over the first 20 years of its life. Mainly due to outdated components and other age-related issues. However, steel buildings from a reputable supplier can last 50 years or more with no problems, other than cosmetic. Therefore, if you decide to sell or upgrade in the future, you’ll get back a much higher proportion of your original investment.
Easier To Expand Or Upgrade
After a few years of trading, almost every company considers expansion. If you have a steel building as your base of operations, it’s relatively easy to add an extra steel frame to link another building to the original. Usually, this is far more challenging to do with wood or masonry.
Shorter Construction Time
Because a Rex Metal Building arrives on-site in kit form, pre-cut, and welded in our factory, it’s a quick and straightforward matter for contractors to assemble the finished building onto pre-existing concrete. In fact, assembly time can be as short as one week. So, the shorter construction time ensures you save on construction costs.
Energy Efficient
If temperature extremes are an issue for your business, we can insulate the walls and roof to prevent heat loss during the winter and heat gain during the summer. Steel buildings have large cavities between the inner and outer walls. Therefore, there’s plenty of room for suitable insulation to help with climate control and to save your heating and cooling overheads. Furthermore, a steel roof reflects the sun’s radiation more efficiently than asphalt. So, when combined with efficient insulation, your structure’s interior stays constant and can lower your heating costs by up to 50%.
Sound Insulation
Our insulation doesn’t only reduce heat transfer. It also prevents sound pollution. This works both ways. If you’re near a residential area and have a steel fabrication workshop or an auto repair shop in the building, you should reduce the noise inflicted on your neighbors. Similarly, you can protect your office workers from disturbing outside noise, thus ensuring worker efficiency and comfort.
Warranties
We are so sure of the quality of our structures that we provide warranties on the various parts of the steel structure. Contact our sales team at Rex Metal Buildings for more information on our exclusive warranty deals.
Several Building Styles
In addition to customizing the building’s interior to suit your requirements, we offer several exterior styles to suit your preference, match existing buildings, overcome extreme snow or rainfall, or satisfy the local zoning and building codes. Contact our sales team, who will be happy to explain the different styles.
Paintwork
Many of our customers ask for exterior colors to match their corporate designs. This isn’t a problem. Alternatively, local building codes might require your building to blend into the surrounding landscape. This isn’t a problem either. Whatever your reasons for changing the color, we can accommodate your preference. Just let us know.
Fireproof
Unlike flammable wood and masonry that cracks under intense heat, steel doesn’t easily catch fire (but it’s not impossible). Typically, structural steel withstands temperatures of up to 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, we ensure all our structures comply with the appropriate building codes related to fireproofing.
Weather Resistance
Our buildings are durable and can withstand most types of weather. The standard designs can withstand minimal snow loads and light wind speeds. But our designers will customize the building’s design to suit your local weather.
Easy To Customize
We’ve already mentioned some of the customized features of Rex Metal Buildings. However, there are several more. These include:
- Roof Style.
- Dimensions and Footprint configuration.
- A clear span with no interior support columns.
- Exterior paint colors.
- We have a full range of different sizes and designs of doors and windows.
Lower Insurance
Steel buildings are generally weatherproof and resistant to most kinds of damage. So, structural property insurance should be very low, often up to 30% lower than a wood-framed building. Furthermore, some states don’t require commercial buildings to hold property insurance. So, if you live in one of these areas, you might question whether it’s worthwhile having insurance anyway. However, we always recommend having suitable commercial property insurance.
Steel Building Standard Features
Although you can customize any of our structures to suit your purpose, listing all the features that come as standard is worthwhile.
Roofs
Although a standard feature, roofs come in a wide variety of shapes and slopes. Generally, these variables depend on the weather conditions in your area.
Walls
Walls can be any height to suit your building’s purpose. We don’t advise having walls higher than necessary as it’s space you can’t use but still requires heating.
Sheeting
The sheeting that covers the structural steel frame provides a weatherproof and secure protective covering that we can finish in almost any color. Furthermore, the sheeting is steel too, so pests like rats can’t gnaw their way through
Weather Resistance
All our structures are weather resistant and protect against inclement weather. However, we can design the structure to accommodate high winds or heavy snow if you live in that climate.
Doors & Windows
All our structures come with doors and windows. But, you can choose from many types of personnel and vehicular doors. Furthermore, the windows can be securely fixed and only allow light through, or you can open them to allow ventilation. Generally, these depend on the building’s purpose.
Insulation
We can supply several types of insulation (or none) depending on the building’s purpose. Generally, we advise you use insulation with the correct R-Value for your climate zone.
Fireproof
Steel doesn’t easily catch fire (but it’s not impossible) and can withstand temperatures up to 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Framework
The structural steel frame used as the basis of the building is suitable for the design loads due to the building’s weight and additional weather loads from wind and snow.
Although these features are standard, we can customize them following your instructions. Quotes are available upon request, and we can deliver to all states across the US.
