Metal RV Garage 2026: 5 Sizes, Prices and Door Tips
Storing an RV outside costs more than most owners think. Sun fades the paint, roof seals crack and storage lots add a monthly bill. A metal RV garage keeps the rig out of the weather at home, and steel is one of the cheapest ways to get the tall, clear span space a motorhome needs.

The key numbers are length, door height and eave height. Get those right and the rest is simple. Below are five common sizes with current prices, plus tips on doors, slabs and extras.
RV Sizes to Plan Around
| RV type | Typical length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Class B camper van | About 18 to 24 ft | Fits many standard garages if the door is tall enough |
| Class C motorhome | About 20 to 35 ft | Cab over bunk adds height |
| Travel trailer | About 18 to 35 ft plus tongue | Allow room for the tow vehicle if you park both |
| Fifth wheel | About 25 to 40 ft or more | Tall front cap, check height carefully |
| Class A motorhome | About 30 to 45 ft | The largest and tallest, often 12 to 13 ft high |
Measure your RV with the roof air conditioner and antenna, and add at least 1 foot of clearance above. Many states limit vehicle height to 13 feet 6 inches, which is a useful upper limit for most rigs. Add 10 feet or more to the length so you can walk around and open the back.

Kits for buildings under 40 feet wide use our $17 to $21 per square foot range plus the 16 foot eave uplift, and 40 foot widths use $14 to $17. Turnkey estimates use $30 to $45 per square foot. Tall doors and higher eaves add to the price, so run your spec in the metal building cost calculator.
Which size fits?
- 20x40: one Class B or C, or a travel trailer up to about 30 feet.
- 24x50: one Class A up to about 40 feet with room to walk around.
- 30x50: a Class A plus a car or boat beside it.
- 40x50: an RV, a truck and a shop area.
- 40x60: two large RVs or an RV with a full workshop. See our 40x60 guide.
Door and Eave Height
For most motorhomes and fifth wheels, plan on a 14 foot tall door, which usually needs a 16 foot eave so the door header and framing fit above it. A 12 foot wide door is the minimum; 14 feet wide makes backing in much easier. Roll up doors are common on RV garages because they need no ceiling track. Our metal building doors guide compares types and sizes.
| RV height | Door height | Typical eave |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 ft | 12 ft | 14 ft |
| 10 to 12 ft | 14 ft | 16 ft |
| 12 to 13.5 ft | 14 to 16 ft | 16 to 18 ft |
Slab and Site
A 4 inch slab is fine for cars, but a heavy Class A puts a lot of weight on each tire. Many owners go to 5 or 6 inches with rebar, and thicken the slab where the wheels sit. Plan a gentle approach so you do not scrape the rear overhang. Use our concrete slab calculator to price the pad.
Worth Adding
- A 30 or 50 amp outlet to keep batteries charged and run the fridge.
- A dump station or cleanout if local codes allow.
- Insulation to cut condensation that drips on the RV roof. See our insulation guide.
- Windows or skylights for natural light when working on the rig.
- A lean to on the side for a car or boat.
Permits and HOAs
Tall accessory buildings often hit height limits in residential zoning. Check maximum height and setbacks before you design, and ask whether an RV garage counts as an accessory structure. Our permits guide has a checklist.
